Parker S. Kennedy named president of First American Title

D.P. Kennedy, 70, will continue as president of The First American Financial Corporation, a general holding company and parent of First American Title Insurance Company. Parker Kennedy will retain his position as executive vice president of First American Financial.
Parker Kennedy is the son of D.P. Kennedy and the great-grandson of the company's founder, C.E. Parker. He becomes the company's fifth president since the firm was founded in 1889.
Before becoming president, Parker Kennedy was executive vice president for five years. Since joining First American in 1977, he has served as senior vice president of the firm's Los Angeles subsidiary, First American Title Company of Los Angeles, and was manager of the Ventura County office in Oxnard, California.
Later he was promoted to vice president-national accounts director on corporate staff in Santa Ana. He was named to the board of directors of First American Title Insurance Company in 1981. In 1987, he was elected to the board of The First American Financial Corporation.
Kennedy serves on the boards of several First American subsidiaries and affiliates. He also serves on the boards of directors of various charitable organizations and is a past chairman of the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce.
A member of the California Bar Association, Kennedy practiced law for four years with Levinson & Lieberman, Beverly Hills, California. He was graduated from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and received his law degree from Hastings College of Law, San Francisco, in 1973. He was born in the city of Orange, Calif., where he now resides.
Lawrence M. White, 50, who had been vice president of operations and a regional vice president, was promoted to executive vice president of First American Title Insurance Company. White joined First American as a poster in 1959 while attending California State University, Fullerton, where he received a degree in business administration. He worked his way up through the title department and in 1972 was appointed to vice president and Orange County Title Division manager. He became vice president-operations on the corporate staff in 1976. In 1983, he was named regional vice president with responsibility to oversee operations in the state of Hawaii. White has served on First American's board of directors since 1985. He resides in the city of Irvine.
D.P. Kennedy, who joined First American in 1948 as legal counsel, had been president since 1963. Under his direction First American expanded from a local office serving one community to a national network of more than 4,500 offices or agents in all 50 states. Also under Kennedy's leadership the company has established itself abroad, providing title services in Guam, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom.
William G. Was, who has been serving as chairman of the board for the past five years, moved to vice chairman. Was also is chairman of the board of First American Title Insurance Company of Arizona, a subsidiary of the parent firm. In addition, he serves as a regional vice president of the national company and oversees operations in the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Utah. Was has been associated with the company since 1958.
This year First American is celebrating 100 years in business.
