Pettus was appointed to this position for a period of one year beginnning at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting of the American Bar Association in New York City in August 1993 and ending at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting of the American Bar Association in New Orleans in August 1994. The appointment was announced by Wesley P. Hackett, Jr., Chair-Elect of the section.
"Only about one member in fourteen in the General Practice Section rises to leadership in the section," Hackett said. "A Vice-Chair is an active member who desires to serve the membership of the section in publications, programs and advocacy.
"The appointment of Nancy M. Pettus reflects the leadership which she has shown among lawyers at the national level," Hackett continued. "Nancy is an important part of a network of lawyers in many localities and has various areas of legal expertise, which is a benefit, not only to her, but to those with whom she comes in daily contact."
Pettus, a resident of Irvine, received her bachelor of arts degree from California State University at Los Angeles and her juris doctor from Loyola University School of Law. She counsels First American in matters pertaining to all aspects of labor relations, including wrongful discharge, wage and hour issues, employment discrimination, equal employment opportunity, government compliance and welfare benefit plans.
An attorney in First American's national legal department since January 1987, Pettus had previously practiced real estate law and estate planning in Orange County.
