Smith began working for First American in 1958 in its Orange County branch office's customer service department. He worked as both a searcher and an escrow officer in Orange County before moving to Santa Barbara in 1967 to become county manager, a position he also held in Riverside. In 1978, Smith returned to Orange County to become county manager as well as regional vice president, responsible for overseeing operations for the California counties of Fresno, Kern, Kings, Orange and Tulare.
Smith is a long-standing member of the Orange County Escrow Association and held the office of first vice president at one time. He is a graduate of Santa Ana Junior College and spent four years in the United States Air Force. A long time resident of Orange, California, Smith will now reside in Palm Desert, California. He is the father of two adult daughters.
