"Carl has done a truly great job throughout his career with First American," said Kennedy. "His presence in the Mid-West has been key to our consistent growth and profitability in that region. We will benefit from his continued input on the board and certainly wish him the best in his retirement."
Hasselwander has been a member of the board since January of 1993 and a regional vice president of First American since 1982, when the company bought his employer, St. Paul Title Insurance Corporation. At that time he was named president of First American Title Insurance Company of the Mid-West and given responsibility for business development in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Tennessee and Wisconsin. In 1991, the Mid-West subsidiary was merged into First American Title Insurance Company.

When Burton was bought by St. Paul Title, he was promoted immediately to vice president-Michigan underwriting. He had been appointed division counsel by the time First American bought the company. A native of Detroit, Hasselwander holds both bachelor's and juris doctor degrees from the University of Michigan.
