McLaughlin started at First American in September 1988 as associate counsel at the Santa Ana, California, corporate office. In March 1989 he transferred to the Redwood City office as counsel, where he remained until being named regional counsel of the San Jose office of First American Title Guaranty Company in 1990. Two years later, he was named vice president-county manager for Solano County, and in 1995, to county manager of Santa Clara County.
McLaughlin holds a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a juris doctor from the University of San Francisco. McLaughlin is also a member of the State Bar of California. A California native, McLaughlin lives in Newport Beach with his wife, Leta, and their newborn son, Alexander.
