THE FIRST AMERICAN CORPORATION APPOINTS JOHN HOLLENBECK TO LEAD TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES

October 10, 2000, SANTA ANA, Calif.

First American Corporation (NYSE: FAF), the nation’s leading provider of business information and related products and services, today announced that it has named John M. Hollenbeck as executive vice president overseeing First American’s technology initiatives.

Hollenbeck, who has been with First American for 20 years, most recently served as national title processes director, and oversaw the creation of First American’s FAST suite of e-commerce products and the company’s centralized and automated title search and production platforms. In his new role, Hollenbeck will extend his oversight of technology to all areas of the company, including the real estate and consumer information services segments.

“John has a complete understanding of the mortgage origination and servicing process and how First American’s menu of products and services fits into this process,” said Parker S. Kennedy, president of The First American Corporation. “John is the perfect person to drive our technology efforts, and his superior knowledge of the capabilities of technology has been instrumental in the success of many of our technology initiatives to date.”

“First American has done a terrific job accumulating data and product lines that drive real estate and other business processes,” said Hollenbeck. “The company has also made significant investments in technology geared to produce and seamlessly deliver multiple products to our customers. Our efforts will now turn to fine tuning and leveraging our technology and databases to develop new products, improve our existing products and decrease costs across all company segments.”

Under Hollenbeck’s leadership, First American started implementing new technologies to improve title production in 1997. The company began by investing in the development of The First American Network, a wide area network (WAN) that connects its offices nationwide. Separately, through a series of acquisitions and strategic partnerships, First American added databases of real estate information including digital title plant information and the nation’s largest repository of imaged property documents. In September, First American announced the release of its FAST Search™ automated search system that utilizes these databases to deliver a complete, electronic set of documents to a title examiner’s desktop in less than six minutes. The company also announced the launch of its FAST Transaction System™, a fully integrated, enterprise-wide, browser-based production system that links with First American’s FAST suite of e-commerce systems and allows customers to electronically order, track and receive First American products from the company’s Web site or through their own loan origination systems.

First American has also developed a number of advanced systems for warehousing and processing real estate data and other information essential to modern business transactions including: First American eAppraiseIT, which offers complete property valuation services online; and FAST Credit, which offers a three-bureau, merged credit report delivered online.

Hollenbeck began his career with First American in 1980 working as a title searcher in the Riverside, Calif., office. In 1983, he moved to the Orange County title branch and served as a title officer and production manager. In 1989, Hollenbeck moved to the home office in Santa Ana, Calif., and became assistant senior underwriter. He was named senior underwriter in 1994, and in 1997 he took the newly created position of national title processes director charged with improving efficiencies across all title operations.
