THOMAS M. LINDEN JOINS FIRST AMERICAN TRUST
BOARD OF DIRECTORS


October 19, 2000, SANTA ANA, Calif.

First American Trust, a member of The First American Corporation (NYSE: FAF) family of companies, today announced the appointment of Thomas M. Linden to its board of directors.

Linden, a certified public accountant, has a strong background in both real estate investments and accounting. He currently serves as president and chief executive officer of Linco Investment Company, a Newport Beach, Calif.-based company that develops and manages real estate and other investments. Prior to forming Linco, Linden was executive vice president at CalMat Co., based in Los Angeles, and also was a founding partner of Smith, Linden & Basso, certified public accountants.

During his career, Linden has served on the board of directors of a number of public, private and nonprofit organizations. He attended the University of Southern California, where he received a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in finance and real estate. A California native, he and his wife, Karen, currently reside in Newport Beach. They have seven grown children.
