THE FIRST AMERICAN CORPORATION NAMES JAMES J. DUFFICY REGULATORY AND SPECIAL COUNSEL

The First American Corporation (NYSE: FAF), the nation's leading diversified provider of business information and related products and services, today announced that it has named James J. Dufficy as regulatory and special counsel.

In this capacity, Dufficy is responsible for working with all operations to assure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. As part of his responsibilities, he represents each of the company's subsidiaries in direct meetings with government regulators - both state and federal. He also is involved in the legislative process, working with outside representatives to assure the company's voice in emerging issues that affect its businesses.

In addition to his other responsibilities, Dufficy has been charged with evaluating the legal and business implications of potential joint ventures with First American's partners and customers, a role that is central to the development and implementation of affiliated business arrangements with customers of each of the company's subsidiaries.

Dufficy joined First American in 1994, when he became regional claims counsel for the company's principal subsidiary, First American Title Insurance Company, in Phoenix, Ariz. In 1996, he was appointed to his most recent position of senior national claims counsel and relocated to the company's home office in Santa Ana, Calif. His prior experience includes serving as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation for four years before opening his own legal practice in 1987.

A native of Colorado, Dufficy received a bachelor's degree in business administration and a juris doctor from the University of Denver. He currently resides in Coto de Caza, Calif., with his wife, Sheryl, and their three children.
