First American Homeownership Foundation Continues Support of St. Petersburg NHS

June 6, 2007, ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.

First American Homeownership Foundation today presented a grant to St. Petersburg Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. (St. Pete NHS) at the 2007 Annual Partners Luncheon, held at the historic Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg.  The St. Pete NHS event, which was co-chaired by Bernie Craig, Pinellas Market president for Bank of America, and Larry Newsome, chief executive officer of Urban Development Solutions, Inc., was attended by several community and business leaders.

The First American Homeownership Foundation grant, in the amount of $5,000, will help support St. Pete NHS’ homebuyer education efforts.  Last year, First American supported the organization’s inter-modal steel building units (ISBU) pilot, an innovative effort that delivered affordable modular homes to several low-income families in St. Petersburg’s Bartlett Park area and was featured on Bob Vila TV and NBC Nightly News.

“The grant we are receiving from First American Homeownership Foundation helps further our efforts to keep the dream of homeownership burning in the hearts of minority group members, single heads of household, low- to moderate-income families and other under-served populations,” said Askia Muhammad Aquil, president and chief executive officer of St. Pete NHS.  “Determined homebuyers refuse to give up in the face of adversity, and effective partnerships forged between organizations like First American and St. Pete NHS are here to help those families overcome barriers.  St. Pete NHS is committed to helping at least 500 new families become homeowners by 2010, and we are counting on the ongoing support and investment of our partners and supporters to help meet our goal.”

“It is an honor and privilege to continue our support of St. Pete NHS and its leadership role in providing much-needed homebuyer education and housing counseling services in the greater St. Petersburg area,” said Cindy Santos-Mendoza, First American Homeownership Foundation manager.  “Without the expert guidance of these counselors, many families would never realize the dream of homeownership.”
